Beads of Light

My graduate collection explores my lifelong experiences on the Isle of North Uist, paying homage to the landscapes that shaped my childhood: shifting colours, dazzling light and rich textures.  The collection celebrates the simple beauty of the Western Isles, and seeks to capture the essence of these landscapes within textile pieces.

Beads of Light is a collection of printed window coverings worked into with intricate hand beading, designed to filter, diffuse and reflect sunlight to support the body's circadian rhythm, as a solution to Seasonal Affective Disorder. Each print comes from starting photography from the Isle of North Uist, the collection as a whole pulling from patterns in rocks, sand, sea and sunlight to highlight the beauty in details often missed. Meticulously beaded by hand, each piece is designed to sparkle.

Comprised almost entirely of silk chiffon, georgette and habotai, each piece drapes and flows, echoing the ebb and flow of the ocean. Light interacts with each fabric differently; transparency and luminosity are at the forefront of my design process.

Brightening Winter Days

One in three people in the UK suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder, a condition triggered by shorter, darker days in winter disrupting the body's internal clock. My collection encourages a new way of engaging with natural light, by offering window coverings that soften sunlight, instead of blocking it out. Each sample explores a different way that light diffusion can become a design choice as well as a therapeutic aid, exploring how embracing the elements can help us to feel happier, all year round.
